Corrugated Case Company

A Derbyshire corrugated cardboard manufacturer has secured several thousand pounds in R&D tax credits following a successful claim put forward by Harrison Beale & Owen (HB&O). The value of the credit significantly exceeded previous claims thanks to the comprehensive approach taken by HB&O’s specialist tax team.

The Corrugated Case Company (CCC) is a corrugated cardboard box manufacturer based in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. A core part of the company’s work is the design of new packaging solutions to meet specific challenges faced by their customers. As a result, their design team is constantly undertaking research and development (R&D) – an activity which companies can claim tax credits for under HMRC’s R&D Tax Relief scheme.

CCC originally applied for R&D tax credits with help from a local adviser, but was frustrated to be awarded just a few thousand pounds in tax credit. This led the company to seek advice from HB&O, following a recommendation from another corrugated manufacturer.

Andrew Levers, Finance Director of CCC, said: “HB&O took a completely different approach. Rather than focusing on individual projects, they encouraged us to look at our R&D activities as a whole, across all our design work.”

Neil Allcroft, Senior Tax Manager, HB&O, said: “The R&D and associated tax relief schemes are designed to encourage UK businesses to innovate. However, the application process is complex and not all organisations are approaching their application in the best way to secure the full reliefs they are entitled to, which is why it’s important to seek input from experienced advisers.”

HB&O worked closely with CCC on a comprehensive process to establish the percentage of work devoted to R&D in the previous two years. As a result, the team was able to develop a case for a much more substantial claim.

“The team from HB&O was totally professional throughout.” Andrew Levers continued. “They told us exactly what information was needed and completed a thorough process, very quickly. We were all astounded to receive a tax refund from HMRC within ten days of submitting the claim!”

“It was clear from the outset that HB&O’s tax team have an in-depth understanding of the R&D tax credit scheme and a positive working relationship with HMRC. We will definitely continue to work with HB&O.” Andrew concluded.

Research and development tax credits are available for any business that seeks to achieve an advance in any field of science or technology. This includes seeking an appreciable improvement in any product or process. To find out if your company is eligible, contact Neil Allcroft on 01926 422292 or
