Rhys Walker receives "The Special Recognition Award"

The 2011 Jaguar Academy of Sport annual awards were held at the Savoy Hotel, London on 27th November.

The awards evening, hosted by James Corden and Kirsty Gallagher, celebrates some of the most inspirational sporting performances over the past year.

I was honoured to be part of this prestigious event that gathered together many of the countryʼs finest sporting talent at the star studded event.

The Jaguar Academy of Sport nominated 5 athletes from the Rising Stars programme.  On the night I was presented with “The Special Recognition Award” by Louise Hazel the Commonwealth Games heptathlon Champion.

Among the award winners were the England Ashes winning cricket team who were represented by Andrew Strauss, Alistair Cook, James Anderson and Ian Bell.  They picked up the award “British Sporting Performance of the Year” for winning the test series in Australia for the first time in 24 years.

The top award of “Most Inspirational Sportsman” went to Mark Cavendish - the cycling Road World Champion.

The award for the “Jump Off The Sofa Moment” went to Dai Greene the 400m World Champion winning the first gold medal for the GB team in Daegu, South Korea.

Personally, I was delighted to have been nominated - and to receive my award in front of so many sporting heroes was a great honour. It was also fantastic to meet Dame Kelly Holmes again who is such an inspiration.

The Jaguar Academy of Sport is a terrific programme that includes Workshops, Talent Days and one-to-one mentoring. Meeting and talking to the ambassadors such as Tim Henman, Denise Lewis, Sir Steve Redgrave who can provide an insight of competing at the highest level is a brilliant experience.
