The larger than life 29-year-old is back behind the wheel and will be on a start grid almost every other weekend until October following an enforced three year absence from the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship.
The brother of Spice Girl Sporty Spice, O’Neill had to take a back seat from the competitive motorsport scene when he was diagnosed with diabetes in 2006, and is now determined to make up for lost time racing for Leamington-based Tech-Speed Motorsport who are led by experienced team boss Marvin Humphries and sponsored by Sunshine.co.uk.
“It is fantastic to back”, said O’Neill.
“Being back on the grid felt just great after all the frustrations of the last few years.
“When I was diagnosed with diabetes I knew about all the implications and that I would have to undergo more fitness tests than anyone else on the circuit, and also be the fittest driver out there.
“We missed the first meeting of this season so winning the championship is probably unrealistic, but a race win is not beyond us and it would be fantastic for the team, and make for a good return.”
Andy Farren, a director at HB&O - who have offices in Coventry and Leamington - has dealt with Tech-Speed’s and O’Neill’s accounts for more than ten years, and is delighted to see the Liverpudlian driver back where he belongs.
“It is great to see Paul back behind the wheel and competing on the big stage”, said Farren.
“Everyone at HB&O wishes Paul, Marvin and the rest of the team the best of luck for the remainder of the British Touring Car season and will be watching their progress with great interest.”
O’Neill will next be in action for Sunshine.co.uk with Tech-Speed Motorsport during round five of the British Touring Car Championship at Croft in North Yorkshire on June 14.
